SEO tools have been lying to funnel builders years.

Not maliciously. They're just pattern matchers. They look at what "most" pages do and flag deviations as errors. And for decades, the pattern has been one H1 tag per page.

So you audit your sales page. 45 H1 errors. Red. Critical. Fix immediately.

And you either panic.. or you've been quietly ignoring it and wondering if it's hurting you.

Here's what Google actually said.

John Mueller, Google's Webmaster Trends Analyst, on the record: "You can use H1 tags as often as you want on a page. There's no limit, neither upper or lower bound. Your site is going to rank perfectly fine with no H1 tags or with five H1 tags."

And again, in a separate session: "Our systems don't have a problem when it comes to multiple H1 headings on a page. That's a fairly common pattern on the web. Our systems aren't too picky and we'll try to work with the HTML as we find it -- be it one H1 heading, multiple H1 headings, or just styled pieces of text without semantic HTML at all."

Gary Illyes, also from Google, confirmed in 2024 that heading hierarchy doesn't impact ranking algorithms. It helps screen readers. It doesn't move rankings.

A 2026 case study analyzing the top 40 Google results across multiple keyword sets found that higher-ranking pages actually tend to have more H1 tags than lower-ranking ones. Not because multiple H1s cause rankings.. but because authoritative, content-rich pages naturally use them.

Now here's the real nuance worth knowing..

If you're running a sales page or opt-in page where traffic comes from ads or social -- the H1 count is completely irrelevant to your business outcomes. Nobody is Googling their way to your VSL. The SEO tools are optimizing for a traffic source you're not using on that page.

If you're writing blog posts you want to rank organically -- one clear H1 with your target keyword is a minor positive relevancy signal. Worth having. Not worth losing sleep over if you have two.

The rule isn't wrong exactly. It's just wildly overstated.

Your 45 H1 tags are fine.
