Primary Blog/The Seldom-Used Open Graph Property That Turns Shared Links Into Autoplaying Video

Someone in my family shared a link in our group iMessage chat yesterday.

Instead of the usual static thumbnail.. a video auto-played. Full motion. No sound. Just looping silently in the preview.

I'd never seen that in iMessage before. So I did what I do..

Checked the source.

😮

There it was: og:video  in the <head> .

Open Graph video. Part of the spec since Facebook created the protocol. Works in iMessage, WhatsApp, Messenger, Slack.. anywhere that reads OG metadata.

Almost nobody uses it.

Every <head>  checklist you've ever seen covers og:title , og:description , og:image . Those are table stakes. og:video  gets one line in the docs, and then silence. Most SEO plugins don't even surface it.

Here's why this matters if you run funnels.

Your link is already being shared. In group chats. In DMs. In Slack channels. Someone who just went through your funnel texts the link to a friend. That is the warmest referral moment you will get from that customer.

And right now, it renders a static thumbnail. Or a grey box.

Wistia ran 7 controlled A/B tests on this exact mechanic -- not ads, just email sends with video thumbnails vs. static images, same list, same copy, everything else identical. Average result: 21.52% more clicks from the video thumbnail version.

The mechanism in iMessage is the same. Person receives a link. A preview renders. They decide whether to tap. The only question is what the preview shows them.

If og:video  is set, it shows motion. Muted. Looping. Your hook playing silently before they've said a word.

Implementation is four lines:

<meta property="og:video" content="https://yourdomain.com/preview.mp4" />
<meta property="og:video:type" content="video/mp4" />
<meta property="og:video:width" content="1280" />
<meta property="og:video:height" content="720" />

Point it at a lean MP4. Keep it short. Design it to work without sound -- no text-dependent openers, no audio-reliant hook. iMessage autoplays muted, so motion has to carry it.

One thing worth knowing: if og:video  and og:image  are both present, the video takes the image slot entirely. So test what it looks like before it goes live.

This has been sitting in the spec for years. Most funnel pages don't have it.

Try it and report back.
