Motion Comes Before Clarity

Russell talks about this idea of a definite purpose in Secrets of Success.
It’s something he pulls from Think and Grow Rich and similar work.

And it’s true.

When you have a definite purpose, a lot of things fall into place.
Decisions get easier.
Distractions matter less.
Effort feels aligned.

I can attest to that firsthand.

But here’s the part that trips people up.

If you don’t feel like you have a definite purpose yet, it can be disheartening.
It can make you feel behind.
Or hesitant to move.

Almost like you’re not allowed to act until the purpose shows up.

I don’t think that’s how it works.

An object in motion tends to stay in motion.
An object at rest tends to stay at rest.

Clarity doesn’t usually come from sitting still and thinking harder.

It comes from movement.

Once you start moving, things begin to shift.
Your perspective changes.
Your position on the path changes.

And from new vantage points, you see opportunities you couldn’t see before.

You also start building skills.

That part is huge.

Solve a problem.
Any real problem.

Even if you’re not convinced it’s the thing you’re called to do.

The muscles you develop along the way—thinking, communication, execution, resilience—those carry forward.

And when your definite purpose does come into focus, you’ll be glad you didn’t wait.

Because you won’t be starting from zero.

You’ll already be in motion.
